Artists Rob and Kim Russell

Husband and wife team Kim and Rob Russell were fresh out of college when they started woodworking out of necessity. They needed a bookcase--so they made one.

Since that first bookcase in 1979, their work has been featured in woodworking books and magazines and sold in shops from Alaska to Florida, Maine to New Mexico.

Kim says, "wood is an especially enjoyable medium to work in, because each piece is unique. With woodworking, you truly must work WITH the wood, with its qualities and quirks.

"It's a challenge to make an image come to life, but it's a challenge that I never tire of. It's exciting to take a piece through the full creative process."

Rob has an instinctive liking to wood. As he explains, "woodworking is in my blood. My ancestors in Europe worked with wood. As a child, wood and woodworking tools fascinated me.

"I take pleasure in all stages of creation: from envisioning the design and selecting the wood, to shaping the piece and hand-rubbing the finish."

Kim and Rob's interests are as varied as their commissions. They share a zest for learning, love of music, commitment to wilderness preservation, and deep connection to nature.

Rob has passed on his musical knowledge and abilities to their daughter, Neara, who is now studying piano and music composition at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

The Russells live and work in their log cabin in Spring Green, Wisconsin.
